Winsor & Newton Oil Mediums
W&N Refined Linseed Oil: This is used to increase gloss and transparency
when mixed with oil paint. It reduces the consistency of oil and improves
flow.
W&N Artists' Gloss Varnish: This is a transparent high
gloss varnish.
W&N Artists' Retouching Varnish: This provides temporary
protection for recently finished oil paintings. Paintings should be allowed to
dry for as long as possible (at least one month) before this is applied. After an
appropriate drying period (minimum of 6 months) a final varnish can be applied
without having to remove the Retouching Varnish.
W&N Damar Varnish: This is a traditional high-gloss
varnish. It requires a strong solvent such as turpentine for dilution.
W&N English Distilled Turpentine: This is the only artists'
quality solvent capable of easily dissolving Damar resin. Turpentine makes a viscous
mixture and evaporates slowly. It should be used with caution as it is the most hazardous and strongest smelling solvent.
W&N Sansodor: This makes a viscous mixture that evaporates
slowly. It is the least hazardous, does not deteriorate in storage and has minimal
odor. This solvent is a good alternative to turpentine.
W&N Artistsí Painting Medium: This is a stand linseed
oil and petroleum distillate that is used for thinning oils and alkyds. It dries
to a flexible film and has a minimal tendency to crack, yellow or wrinkle.
W&N Liquin: This is the most popular of all alkyd painting
mediums. It speeds up the drying time and improves flow. It increases gloss and is resistant
to yellowing. It is an ideal choice for glazing.
W&N Liquin Fine Detail: This is similar to a traditional
Copal medium. It is used for glazing, smooth blending and detailed work without
visible brush strokes. Liquin Fine Detail dries to a gloss finish.
W&N Liquin Impasto Gel: This helps to extend and thicken oil paints.
It will retain texture and brush strokes while drying to a semi-gloss finish.
W&N Liquin Light Gel: This speeds up drying when mixed with oil paints, is non-drip and
drys to a beautiful gloss finish.
W&N Wingel: This is an oil-modified alkyd resin that speeds
drying, improves flow and gloss while maintaining a slightly stiffer consistency
than Liquin Original.
